bloggy Monday

Well, what have I done for my planet today? Not much I'm afraid : resisted the temptation to water what was once "a lawn"- well something flattish and yellowish, still waiting for the long overdue September downpour that usually marks the end of summer in these parts; switched off a couple of unnecessary lights at school and at home; discussed the potential threats to our environment with students who can't think why it makes good sense (even business sense) to pay some Ecuadoran forest inhabitants for not exploiting their underground oil reserves; and came home to do something most environmentally unfriendly and hugely carbon-footprinting (if such an adjective can be invented):

I sat down to a glass of Martinican white rhum with a twist of lime shipped all the way from Mexico and a spoonful of brown sugar imported direct from my native Guadeloupe, because after reading Cristiana's lovely post about her home country, I needed to let myself be carried away by nostalgia.
So sorry planet, but you know, most days I stick to Provence wine.

What I really loved, though was Doris Lessing's more than unenthusiastic reaction on hearing the news of her Nobel Prize: difficult to decide whether this is sheer modesty, a marvellously zen attitude, or extreme vanity. In any case, it shows character.

Clutching my pillow last night (a favourite childish habit) felt a bit strange, after seeing "Before the devil knows you're dead" in which pillows tend to be used more as weapons of mass destruction. A good movie, in spite of a few all-too-predictable director's tricks; but then good old Sidney Lumet is I think well over 80. As the old (and pillow-wielding) avenger, Albert Finney is absolutely superb.

Long time no blog

But I have an FO to show off (though nothing grand), a pretty headband to keep my darling daughter's ears warm:

It is knitty's calorimetry, knitted with virtually no alterations, except I thought it a little wide. But even Chloe's boyfriend found it to his liking. There's a sweater to match on the needles, so soon I hope it will be ready to photograph. In the meantime, it's back to marking stacks of papers, and maybe I can find a couple of hours to plant my newly arrived pansies and carnations.

La vie est belle (parfois)

Early-ish on Sunday morning, and my lion off for the day to rehearsal, the blue and gold morning feels like the first day of the holidays: plenty of time on my hands, and I can take it easy after the mad rush of the last two weeks. Of course I'll start panicking around midday, and even now I tell myself that I should know better. But I claim the right to foolishness, and so I'll spend the next few hours in blissful pretence that there is no school tomorrow.
Another reason for being elated: I've just joined the Domiknitrix club, having received this great book yesterday. Can't wait to get started on a model, but I can't decide which one first.

All gone!

You'd think I am old enough to know better: what you have here is a tragic swatch and gauge miscalculation, and after a few hours of pretending it would turn out all right, I had to face the dismal truth : frog the lot!

While the rest of the family, (and of the French population, it seems), are busy watching the rugby on telly, I take a little time off schoolwork to attend my main WOP, a big sweater for my man, listening to the Jaguares singing John Lennon's "gimme some truth" in Spanish, and Aerosmith doing a reggae version of "Give Peace A Chance", the best bits in the Save Darfur CDs.

Le ciel est par dessus le toit (what's the story, morning glory?)

So it's back to school and obviously, summer's back too. It's also fig season starting, and among the most sensuous experiences I know is eating a fresh fig straight off the tree, still warm from the sun and all gooey where the white gummy stuff comes out. My tree is green figs, so you know they're ready to eat from the stretch marks in the skin and a slight limpness in the angle at which they hang that say the time is ripe. All you need to do is pull it open and enjoy the burgundy coloured flesh.
