Roi des forêts

Mon beau sapin:

That's Mii!

Then there was the shock discovery that I am "virtually" six whole years older than my real self, all the more unsettling as my live-in genius clocked in about 20 years younger (we're the same age). It didn't come as much comfort that my son was declared 38 by wii standards (he's 18).

And tonight I am going to try my new toy: I am not sure if this is a further step into a consumerist artificial paradise, or towards grannification, but I got a Wii board thing, supposedly to help me exercise and preserve what figure I've got left.

I was really struck by the dark silhouette of the fisherman in his grounded boat, outlined against a white background that merges sea and sky, surrounded by the symmetrical arcs of the rocks, which could be either protective or threatening. Has he found shelter there? From what dangers? The painting is a testimony, picturing a site that was to disappear forever, and the formless expanse beyond the lonely figure of the man evokes to me the uncertainty of the future.

Rites of passage

On Tuesday morning my youngest tok his driving test for the second time, and even though he was quite pleased with himself, I spent the next two days worrying and lost sleep in case something had gone wrong without him noticing, like running over someone, or giving the wrong name to the examiner, or saying something they might have taken amiss: my imagination is limitless when it comes to dreaming up disasters. Buth that's it, he's got the little slip that says he's passed, and the family has now moved into a new era of "adulthood".

The convertible stulpen: as made for my mother from the lovely merino we bought together when I was in Paris. While maki
ng them I sometimes felt like Edward Scissorhands, with two sets of spikes (my dpns) clicking away in my hands, and I remember the worried look on a fellow traveller's face coming home on the train.

I can't believe it is almost two months, and yet it's true, I have not posted for ages. Life has been more or less the same, marginally more hectic maybe, but somehow it didn't seem worth my trouble, or yours gentle reader, if you exist.

After the glorious teachers' swap, I joined one organised by Luciep for the francophone knitters' group on Ravelry, and got spoilt:

Unfortunately Biscotte, my swappee hasn't received my package yet, but here's a pic of the little bag I included to hold the items I'd chosen for her; the theme was " a colour", and she had picked burnt orange. Yes I know my bag is emerald green and off-white, but I meant to add my personal touch, and since she has not seen the inside yet, I am not spoiling the surprise.

In between time, I went to visit my mother in Paris for a couple of days, and checked out a yarn store on rue de Réaumur which I had read about on Ravelry (yes, you've guessed, the fact I haven't been blogging much lately has something to do with that den of temptations ). We chose a lovely steely grey merino to make a pair of convertible mittens for her, with the help and advice of the store owner, a funny woman who seemed initially a little gruff, but turned out quite chatty after a few minutes. We were thankful for the half-hour out of the rain, and I told them of the impending hordes of Ravelers about to descend on her establishment like myself.
