Incidentally, much to the delight of my physicist partner, OS Samantha's artificial intelligence seems to get a great boost from reading about string theory, and she finally realizes, along with all the other virtual companions that share so many humans' intimacy in the film, that they do not belong to our world so they go off to lead their own existence somewhere else.

The film has many faults, and leaves a lot of questions unanswered, the first one being, as always for me "how come his flat is always immaculate and he never does a stroke of housework?" What are the social and economic implications of an app that creates "beings" capable of making  autonomous choices (including that of going off the network)? It seems improbable that the only time Samantha suggests a purchase, it is a party dress for Theodore's goddaughter's birthday. A commercial app would have reminded him, not only about his business meetings, but also of all the special offers in the shops he would be passing on his way home

In a supporting role as the long-suffering, slightly loopy best friend with a massive inferiority complex, Amy Adams is excellent. And she too succumbs to the fascination of a make-believe friend in her computer, to find herself devastated when she is deserted by her "OS". This could be seen as a kind of warning: the action seems to be set in the future, but it looks a lot like the present.

Even when the dancers seem to playfully pass each other while walking across the stage, deftly swapping multicoloured towels and jackets, there's an undercurrent of aggression in their gesture of stripping each other.

So the next night, when we found ourselves in the crowded basement of a bar called "La Lucha Libre" in the Latin Quarter, to watch a wrestling match it was difficult not to draw a parallel between the two performances.

The audience was mostly male, I suspect I was the oldest person about, and a large proportion of the patrons had taken advantage of the Happy Hour offers even before I arrived with my daughter and my niece.

But I have grown up, and I know now that wrestling matches are all for show, and the ultimate defeat of the villain is always part of the script.
Somehow, not all the men cheering the wrestlers seemed to have cottoned on to this fact: one of them, who was there for his mate's stag night, and consequently wasn't in a fit state to think,  started taking things very seriously and protested when the faking was too obvious. To me, it was precisely the parody that made the show bearable, and even fun.
